NEXT MONTH:   Larry "Joker"

I was born in Saltillo, TN in 1949. I joined the US Army in 1967.  I went to Vietnam on Dec 4, 1968, where I served as an Infantryman with E. Co. 52nd Inf LRRP. which was later re-designated as H Co 75th Rangers.

I left Vietnam and got out of the Army on Nov 27, 1969. I got out as a Sargent (E-5). My personal decorations included the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the Air Medal.

I bounced from one minimum wage job to another for the next six years.  In the meantime, I met and married my beautiful wife, Brenda. She had an 18 month old baby girl, Stephanie and we later had two boys, James and Jason.  (Brenda and I just celebrated our 44th anniversary.  The kids are all grown with families of their own) .

Having no education to speak of (High School grad) and no marketable job skills, I decided to go back in the service, in 1975. This time I joined the US Navy. I served as an un-designated Airman (E-3) assigned to VAW-125 for 18 months before going to A School.

After graduating as an Aviation Antisubmarine Operator (AW) Third Class (E-4), I was assigned to Moffett Field, CA as an Acoustic Sensor Operator, on board the P-3C Orion aircraft.

I spent the next 17 years, serving in two sea duty P3 Squadrons (VP-48 & VP-40), as well as a training squadron (VP-31) and a tour as the senior instructor in the P-3C tactical simulator (COMPACWINGSPAC & CPW-10).

I was selected as COMPACWINGSPAC Sailor of the Year for 1981.

In 1993, I was transferred to the Fleet Reserve, with 20 years of combined Army and Navy active duty.

I retired as a Chief Petty Officer (E-7). In my Naval career, I logged over 3000 flight hours in the P3-C as a sensor operator, hunting submarines.

After retiring out of the Navy, I worked in the tech industry in “Silicon Valley” for the next 15 years. Then, in 2008, Brenda and I both retired and moved to Sweetwater, TN.

I joined the CVMA in 2014. I was elected chapter Secretary in 2016.

I’ve been riding motorcycles since 1965. I currently ride a 2006 Harley Electra Glide Classic
